Information for Voters

Voting Dates and Times

The Municipal elections will be held on Monday, October 24, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Electors may also vote on one of the following Advance Poll dates:

- Thursday, October 20, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

- Friday, October 21, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Voting Method

The 2022 Municipal elections will be on traditional ballots with tabulators. Electors will have to come in person to vote in the 2022 Municipal Elections for the Town of Hawkesbury.

Voting Location

Both the advance voting and the election day will be located at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex, 425 Cartier Blvd, Hawkesbury, Ontario, K6A 1M4

Important information regarding Voter Information Cards

Did you receive your Voter Information Card in the mail?

If you have received it and the information is correct, it means that you are registered to vote in the next municipal elections!

Did you receive a card that contains incorrect information? Please present yourself at Door 1 of the Town Hall with a valid ID in order to complete a form to modify the list of electors from Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

If you haven't received a card, don't worry – you will be able to vote during the elections! You simply need to show up at the polling station with a valid ID in order to vote.

Do you want voting on election day to be quick and easy? Update your information in advance! Please fill pdfForm HAWK-01 and bring it, along with a valid ID, to the Town Hall during business hours.

Who can vote?

Are you eligible to vote in the next municipal elections? To be eligible, you must meet the following conditions on October 24, 2022:

- Reside in the Town of Hawkesbury or own or lease a piece of land in the Town of Hawkesbury, or be the spouse of such owner or tenant;

- Be a Canadian citizen;

- Be at least 18 years old; and

- Not being prohibited from voting under subsection (3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law

Removing a name from the Voters’ List

If an elector wishes to remove their name from the Voters’ List, or if a person’s name appears on the Voters’ List and another elector has reason to believe that the person’s name should no longer be there (e.g. the person is deceased or has moved), the elector may take the following steps to have the name removed:

1. Complete an Application to pdfRemove a Name from the Voters’ List (Form HAWK-11); and

2. Mail or deliver it to the Elections Office at 600 Higginson Street, Hawkesbury, Ontario, K6A 1H1 along with the supporting information as to why the person’s name should be removed from the Voters’ List.

The final day to remove someone’s name from the Voters’ List is Monday, October 24, 2022.

Who cannot vote?

You cannot vote in a municipal election if you are:

- a person serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution;

- a corporation;

- a person acting as executor or trustee or in another representative capacity;

- a person convicted of a corrupt practice described in section 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996

Voter identification

All electors will be required to present a piece of identification in order to receive a ballot at their voting place. The identification must show your name and address and photo identification is not required.

If you cannot present an acceptable proof of identity and residence will be required to make a statutory declaration prior to being issued a ballot.

You may present one of the following as a piece of personal identification:

- Ontario driver’s licence

- Ontario Health Card (photo card)

- Ontario Photo Card

- Ontario motor vehicle permit (vehicle portion)

- cancelled personalized cheque

- mortgage statement, lease or rental agreement relating to property in Ontario

- insurance policy or insurance statement

- loan agreement or other financial agreement with a financial institution

- document issued or certified by a court in Ontario

- any other document from the government of Canada, Ontario or a municipality in Ontario or from an agency or such a government

- any document from a Band Council in Ontario established under the Indian Act (Canada)

- income tax assessment notice

- child tax benefit statement

- statement of employment insurance benefits paid T4E

- statement of old age security T4A (OAS)

- statement of Canada Pension Plan benefits T4A (P)

- Canada Pension Plan statement of contributions

- statement of direct deposit for Ontario Works

- statement of direct deposit for Ontario Disability Support Program

- Workplace Safety and Insurance Board statement of benefits T5007

- property tax assessment

- credit card statement, bank account statement, or RRSP, RRIF, RHOSP or T5 statement

- CNIB Card or a card from another registered charitable organization that provides services to persons with disabilities

- hospital card or record

- document showing campus residence, issued by the office or officials responsible for student residence at a post-secondary institution

- document showing residence at a long-term care home under the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, issued by the Administrator for the home

- utility bill for hydro, water, gas, telephone or cable TV or a bill from a public utilities commission

- cheque stub, T4 statement or pay receipt issued by an employer

- transcript or report card from a post-secondary school

Note: A voter notification letter and a Canadian passport cannot be used as a piece of identification.

Voting by proxy

Electors can appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf should they be unable to make it to a voting place during voting opportunities. A proxy must be an eligible elector and can still cast their own ballot.

A proxy can vote for only one other person unless they are representing members of their own family. A proxy appointed for a person who is not a family member can act as the proxy for this one person only. A person cannot be appointed as a proxy for a non-family member and a family member at the same time.

You can appoint a proxy until Friday, October 21, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. To appoint a proxy:

1. You and your proxy must fill out two (2) copies of the pdfAppointment for Voting Proxy – Form 3

2. The proxy must take the completes forms and a copy (or photo) of a valid piece of identification to the Clerk’s Office during regular business hours, and have it certified by Town staff.

3. The proxy brings the original copy of the pdfAppointment for Voting Proxy – Form 3 that was certified and a piece of personal identification to the voting place to cast your ballot on your behalf.
